Today marked the 1st anniversary of Egypt's 2011 uprising. It's been a very eventful year to say the least. A year filled with happiness and hope of a democratic future for the people, but also a year filled with tragic events. We've seen a lot of moments being shared live on Bambuser and it's fantastic to be one of the channels used by the people to broadcast video and distribute information

Although we know and understand that the Egypt uprising and revolution actually has little to do with social media and online tools, we're honored to be a service appreciated and used by so many to show the world from their perspective, somewhat democratizing news reporting.

We continue to follow and observe the events and we do our best to create a service that can be used for broadcasting everything from children's birthdays to revolutions.

Blogger is one of the world's largest tools for blogging. That's why we're extra happy to launch the Bambuser integration to Blogger.

The integration basically means that you in real-time can Share your broadcasts to your Blogger blog as a new post. It's super easy to get started. Simply go to your Dashboard, click on Connect in the right column, click on Blogger and follow the steps to connect.

When connecting, you can choose whether to Share new broadcasts automatically or to Share only selected broadcasts. Whenever you use your mobile phone or your web cam for LIVE broadcasting, you can then choose to share the broadcast instantly on your blogger blog and let all your followers get to know what you're up to. Christmas and the New Year have just passed by and we will try to summarize 2011. There are so many moments we would like to point out, but here's a short recap.

January marked the inception of the Arab Spring. We were thrilled to be one of the services of choice for observers that wanted to broadcast real-time information to the world. The usage rewarded us with mentions in media outlets such as New York Times, Financial Times, BBC, and Wall Street Journal.

Our team enabled broadcasting using hardware accelerated video on many devices, providing a dramatically improved broadcasting and viewing experience.

In April our website and mobile apps began receiving a visual overhaul, with a brand new design created together with our friends at Identity Works. We will continue deployment of the new look in 2012, so stay tuned!

During the summer we rolled out a beta version of a mobile-friendly embed code. Since then we have improved many parts of it and continue to extend it, to eventually replace our old-fashioned Flash-only embed codes entirely.

We saw the dawn of Kaivuriskaba on Bambuser, freely translated to "Mini excavator challenge". Six mini excavators were placed at various malls around Finland and populated by six Finns. The rules were simple: Last man sitting wins the excavator! It was a bit like American Idol, but without the singing and judging.

In late summer our Executive chairman Hans Eriksson headed for a 24-hour live-streamed trip around London, guided only by viewers who tuned in to watch and chat with him. He called it a social media experiment and was so overwhelmed with the result that he set out for a sequel in New York a few weeks later. When summarizing the New York trip Hans said: "It was absolutely the most fantastic travel experience of my life!".

October offered many great updates from our team. We made our developer API public, allowing anyone to creatively integrate Bambuser content. Finding broadcasts by location became more intuitive with the new Map page. The Bambuser app for the Nokia N9 was released already when the phone launched and it delivers stunning quality!

The world experienced a global explosion of a local phenomenon - the Occupy Wall Street Movement. As traditional media often tried to mute the cry for change, activists turned to online broadcasting services such as Bambuser. We were pleased to see many activists and citizen journalists swap from competing services to Bambuser when they realized the differences in mobile live streaming quality and support we provide.

In November our team brought another great feature to all our Android and iOS users: recording video offline. This may not be the same level of innovation as live video broadcasting, but it is an important add-on and quite useful for anyone that is out of network coverage or simply don't want to broadcast live, yet want all video stored on the same service. We've recently added this feature also to our Maemo and Meego apps.

December was all but a slow month. With fantastic efforts from everyone in the development team, we released a major update to our Android and iOS apps in the form of an integrated mobile dashboard. This allows users to manage their account, as well as their broadcasts, within the app.

We saw the uptake of Bambuser among activists and citizen journalists soar. It has been amazing to see how people use Bambuser to let the world know what's happening anywhere, anytime.

Just in time for Christmas we were mentioned by Wired UK as one of the #1 Big Ideas for 2012. Shortly after, The Next Web appointed Bambuser as the #1 Media App of The Year!

It has truly been a fantastic year at Bambuser and I can't describe how proud I am to be a part of the Bambuser team. I couldn't think of a better way to wrap up this year than with the awards above, that I entirely dedicate to our team, users, fans and investors. I'm honored and grateful for your devoted support and I look forward to an even bigger and more exciting year in 2012!

What a year

2011 has been a very interesting year for us at Bambuser. We've seen an increased usage of the service and it's been taken up by all kind of people and groups of people. What we really have loved to see and to work with are protesters around the world. From Egypt through the Middle East to Russia, the Occupy Movement in the US and Europe, it's been phenomenal to see how people have utilized Bambuser to cover unrest and injustice.

We're equally happy for the feedback we've gotten from our users, from media and even from human rights organizations - it's been very emotional to the whole team and we'd like to say thank you to all our users and everyone we've worked with during the year. We can't complain about how the year has ended either, Bambuser was named the number one idea on Wired UK's list for 25 Big Ideas for 2012 and named number one media app in The Next Web.

It's not only protesters using Bambuser, we're seeing all kinds of things on the web site. Make sure to check out "crew picks" on Bambuser.com for some interesting, funny and educational videos. Now we're looking forward to 2012 and hoping for a more peaceful world but we'll always stand by protesters around the world fighting for democracy and free speech.

Mobile dashboard for iOS and Android

Your Bambuser Dashboard makes it easy to view, manage and share your broadcasts to various 3:rd party services that you can connect to. It also includes access to account settings, such as password and email management.

Now, we are introducing a brand new mobile-friendly dashboard integrated in our mobile applications, with a gorgeous look designed especially for small touch screens. This is yet another initiative in our efforts to make live video broadcasting as mobile and easy as possible.

To start with, this is available for iOS and Android. As always, you can get the updated applications from Apple's App Store and the Android Market.

Recording offline is now available at Bambuser

You can now use Bambuser to capture video offline too. If you don't have a suitable Internet connection available or otherwise don't want to broadcast live, our apps for iOS and Android can now easily be set to record offline. The captured video can be uploaded and published on your account later when you have a suitable connection.

This often requested addition makes it possible to use Bambuser in many situations where broadcasting live is not an option. When the video is uploaded it will show up on your profile next to all other archived broadcasts, and can be shared to the social networks and sites of your choice. Bambuser challenge in New York City

In early September we sent executive chairman Hans Eriksson to cruise through London for 24 hours, while broadcasting live throughout the whole adventure. Hans had an excellent experience thanks to everyone who continuously chatted with him, supported him and gave him advice and directions through the Bambuser chat. It was so much fun that we have decided to send the old man out on another adventure. He can consider himself lucky, as this time we have decided to send him to the city that never sleeps, the Big Apple – New York City.

At 9am EDT (14:00 CET) on Tuesday the 1st of November, Hans will set off from Times Square to discover the hidden treasures of New York City. He will broadcast live for 24 hours and YOU who are watching will be the most important part of making this a great experience for other viewers as well as for Hans. Bambuser + Flattr = True

With the quickly growing popularity of live video streaming, we at Bambuser are now giving all our users a chance to earn both recognition – and money – for their work.

From today, all Bambuser users will have the opportunity to earn money through the integration of the micropayment platform Flattr. Viewers can now flattr content creators by rewarding them with a micro-donation.

This is a real breakthrough for broadcasters as admirers of their work can now financially reward them for the content they create.

Working in a similar way to the Facebook Like button – but with a monetary value – registered Flattr users can support broadcasters simply by clicking on the Flattr button on the Bambuser site.

Broadcasters can get a Flattr button next to their broadcasts by connecting to Flattr through the Bambuser Dashboard. Simply click on Connect and Flattr under Settings to the right to get started.

This weekend it was fascinating and touching to see all #occupy demonstrations from all over the world being captured with Bambuser. We're honored and proud to have been shown that confidence from protesters all over world.

Equipped with little more than smartphone and access to a 3G or WiFi service, increasing numbers of Bambuser users were broadcasting LIVE to give their cause a digital, global and interactive voice. Altogether, over two thousand live broadcasts from the protests around the globe were viewed by the public.

Hundreds of thousands people also clicked onto the site to watch live broadcasts from a range of locations, including all major European capitals as well as cities in the US and Canada.

For us, these numbers emphasize how Bambuser has become the digital tool of choice to capture and document important moments and situations instantly with a minimum of hardware and at a low or no cost. The uptake of live streaming is spreading incredibly quickly as the public take the opportunity to share developments in their cities in real time.

It's apparent that people across the globe are eager to share what's happening not only on Twitter and Facebook but also through live and interactive broadcasting. As the saying goes, a picture paints a thousand words.

We want you to enjoy our product as much as possible. Recently, we have taken small but important steps to improve our service further - this time with focus on apps and integration.

Update for the iOS app

Our iOS app update is now available on the App Store and includes improvements for iOS5. This update also adds support for sharing broadcasts via e-mail.

Additionally, we have added a notification badge to remind you of any unsent data. Uploading unsent complement data will improve the quality of your stored broadcasts, especially if there were connection problems during a live broadcast.

App for Nokia N9

We are happy to announce that we, already at the launch of the Nokia N9, can offer a brand new Bambuser app for it. The app is available now on the Ovi store and produces great video quality and frame rate on the N9, even surpassing the quality of the predecessor N900.

Premium solutions

New features and some updates

We are very excited to share some projects we've been working on for quite a while. This includes a great map feature, new chat log, sharing to Yammer, mobile app updates and the Bambuser Challenge.

Bambuser Map

Here at Bambuser we encourage people to show the world. Our new Google Maps mash-up allows visitors to browse broadcasts based on where in the world they are positioned.

Chat log

The Bambuser chat has for a long time made it easy for viewers and broadcasters to interact live, but the log has not been available afterwards. From now on, also those watching a Bambuser broadcast on-demand can follow the chat history, played back in sync with the on-demand video.

Sharing to Yammer

All Bambuser users can now share their live broadcasts to Yammer, another great 3rd party service in our already long list of supported services. Just go to your Dashboard and scroll down to Connect and you'll find it among Facebook, Twitter and many more.

App updates

Make sure you download our recently updated mobile apps for Android and Symbian. The updates include performance and user interface improvements.

The way news is being reported has changed tremendously over the past few years! Today's news are immediate, digital and social.

As we noticed throughout the Arab up-rise and during last week's rioting and looting in London and Manchester, record numbers of people are instantly broadcasting events onto the web. Gone are the days when, in order to go live, you needed huge technical knowledge, specialized TV broadcast trucks, satellite dishes and high costs. A new generation of professional and citizen broadcasters are on the streets and getting their stories out live, equipped with little more than Bambuser, a smartphone and access to a 3G or WiFi network.

During the last months, we've been busy developing enhanced apps that makes broadcasting even easier for Bambuser users. We won't bore you with the detailed description of what we've been up to - the important take is that Bambuser now allows you to broadcast higher quality video and audio on modern phones without needing more bandwidth. You'll find the improvements obvious when using the latest smartphones - iPhones as well as a growing list of Android models.

New integration brings our mobile live video broadcasting solutions to Screen9 clients

In our efforts to meet the ever increasing demand for publishing live and interactive video content online, we're now happy to announce that we've teamed up with online video platform provider Screen9 to offer Bambuser's leading mobile live video broadcasting services to Screen9 customers.

The integration will allow existing and new Screen9 customers to seamless publish Bambuser live videos via their Screen9 account (subsequently available for On Demand playback as well of course). Bambuser users can also register for a Screen9 account and enjoy the benefits of both services. This offers a unique opportunity for broadcasters to easily capture video anywhere, using a mobile phone or professional equipment, coupled with the rich functionality of a professional Online Video Platform (OVP). The integration will only be available for users with Bambuser Premium accounts.

Jukka Mutanen's Kaivuriskaba

Do you remember Jukka Mutanen who drove a mini excavator through Finland? He became a Finnish hero doing so last summer and the event drove so much attention that he has now got a competition coming up called Kaivuriskaba starting on June 1st.

The competition has been arranged in 6 cities in Finland and invite participants to stay in Japanese Takeuchi mini-excavators as long as possible. The winner will get to drive it home (remember that the top speed is 4 km/h).

Now, the big question is how long the participants can stay on it. Is it a day, a week or a month? All participants are streamed with Bambuser and the audience can chat with the daredevils either live in the shopping malls or via web chat. Every competitor has an iPad, allowing them also to follow each other, making everything more exciting.

Phils united to rebuild tornado-stricken town Phil Campbell

You may have heard of one Phil Campbell in your life but have you heard of all the Phil Campbells of this world reunited in one place: the town of Phil Campbell, Alabama? Phils United have one critical mission: help the tornado-stricken town in its hour of need and rebuild it!

The tornado sadly devastated the 1,000-person town on the afternoon of April 27th, taking hundreds of homes, two churches, gas stations and retail stores on its way.

Our local Phil Campbell will be hitting the road in 2 weeks time (14th of June that is), live streaming from his car on his way from Tampa to Phil Campbell. We managed to catch him today to take us through his preparations and expectations. Watch the video at Bambuser.

Having Phil involved in the initiative is a great opportunity for us to share the support of United Phil Campbell and the testimonials of inhabitants on the ground in real-time. Phil will document what they have been through and take us through how the event has affected the lives of the inhabitants and, more importantly, how they are now experiencing the re-building of their own town.

Bambuser Robot Competition

Calling all Bambuser users with a bit of imagination! We were inspired by our friends at Sortedam Ventures who built a "crowd-sourcing" Bambuser robot that can receive remote orders. It looks like they're not the only ones. Check also Give Away Candy that lets you participate from your twitter account.

Do you think you can even do better and want a challenge

Build a Bambuser robot and get the chance to WIN a professional media campaign, and be featured in some of the world's biggest newspapers and TV shows.

How to participate

Build a Bambuser robot based on Bambuser broadcasting technology (using a smartphone or webcam/DV cam) with crowd-sourced functionality built-in to enable interaction with the audience. To enter the competition a team or individual should:

Broadcast the construction phase and finalized version of the robot using the hashtag #robot. (You can broadcast as many videos as you like)

The competition is running from the 24th of May to the 14th of June 2011 (12:00am GMT). The winners must be aged 18 years or over. This promotion may be conducted over several different websites simultaneously. The broadcast of the robot needs to be publicly available on bambuser.com until at least the 30th of June 2011. Participants can broadcast as many videos as they like to participate, using the hashtag #robot in the broadcast title.

An email will be sent to the winner informing them of their win. Only persons registered with Bambuser are eligible. Prizes must be claimed within 14 days. Unclaimed prizes will be void. NACUE conference contest

The Bambuser crew is in London at the 3rd Annual NACUE Leaders Training Conference.

The event aims to help student societies develop leadership skills and shape strategies for the academic year ahead. Enterprise society presidents from 70 universities across the UK, in addition to international member countries, are attending, and the Bambuser crew is there to show how Bambuser can provide them with a powerful tool to easily get their message out to a broad audience in real-time, across popular social media channels.

Unveiling a brand new Bambuser

We thought it was time for a little make-over.

As you know, at Bambuser, we're all about change for the better, so we've decided to practice what we preach and refresh our identity and site.

Bambuser now supports the iPad 2!

As most of you know, Bambuser is always doing its best to support as many platforms as possible and, true to our word, we've been busy optimizing our app to run smooth on the Ipad 2.

We made sure to take advantage of the impressive features the iPad 2 has to offer, including support for use of the high quality front and back cameras as well as hardware encoded video at 25 frames per second.

The iPad 2 announcement came just over a month ago and was live-streamed on Bambuser by TechCrunch's Mike Butcher. As was to be expected, when the hotly anticipated device was released to buy, the queues outside Apple stores snaked around street corners as shoppers camped outside to be one of the first to own it.

As many of you know, a number of the Bambuser team is at SXSW. You can follow their journey, and see all the fun they’re having here and here. I, however, am not, and I’m a little more than jealous! The mecca of all things cool – music, film and interactive, SXSW attracts everyone, from the cool to the plain odd. Everyone hits Austin, Texas, for a week of launches, parties, panels and debates.

A fantastic show, everyone who is anyone is there, the influencers are out in force and this is your chance to meet them, and bond over a beer… or three. It’s also the coolest place in the world to launch. Nothing says ‘we rock ’ quite like it, and chances are that your target market of early adopters are right there. Look at Foursquare, it launched at SXSW two years ago and thanks to the key influencers who started using it at the show, growth has sky-rocketed and continues to do so with this year’s tie-up with Amex among a slew of SXSW specific badges.

But, what if you’re not there? Well, thanks to the internet and social media, you’re never too far away from the action. You can follow, as it happens, on Twitter with the #sxsw, and do the same on Bambuser and you’ll find all the videos from the event. You can live chat to streamers, or follow them for updates and videos what they’re doing. One of the biggest tech conferences of the year, South by South-West, gives the tech scene the opportunity (or excuse) to head to Austin, Texas to meet, learn, share and party with their peers.

While we may have taken the idea of "heading there" too literally, Phil Campbell, a Bambuser fan and blogger, is road-tripping from Florida to Austin, Texas, in time to catch the action of SXSW starting on Friday. Phil is documenting his adventures on his Bambuser channel.

You can also follow @philcampbell and his fellow driver/passenger Krissi, in their crossroad adventure, watching them live, and chatting with them about the next app or what to expect at SXSW. Why not share useful recommendations on stops, music tracks and anything else you might find relevant. Phil will be live streaming all the hottest events at SXSW. From parties to speakers to interviews, catch it all live!

International Women's Day: Celebrating inspirational women all over the globe

Starting in 1911, during a time of cultural and industrial change where equality was significantly different from today, International Women’s Day has become an important day for women all over the world who want to get their voices heard. Starting with a march in New York City for greater women’s rights, these have become tradition, and many are taking place today, with tens of thousands of people coming together on bridges all over the world, from London to Rwanda, thanks to the organisation Join Women on the Bridge.

An incredible one hundred years on, International Women’s Day has become a day of celebration for many, with activities aimed at connecting women occurring throughout the day, ranging from business conferences to art workshops; in some countries, it is even considered an official holiday.

Bambuser Competition: #LFW11 Winner

Thanks for your participation in the Bambuser Fashion Competition! We had a great turnout, enjoying some really inspiring broadcasts. We also learned some nice stylish tips & we will all be a little more fashionable because of it.

Some of the highlights were learning about why 50's fashion inspires LauraLou! We witnessed everything from cutting edge trends at London Fashion Week catwalk shows and were introduced to a few upcoming designers, such as Natti working with some stunning pieces on her mannequin.

The choice was hard but the two most compelling broadcasts that also generated the most enthusiasm from the Bambuser Crew came from If You Please and FarhanaB.

We loved watching the FarhanaB broadcast as her and her friend rummaged through their clothes and took us on a trendy journey of her fashionable flat. We got to see her rack of edgy finds and learn about both her and her friends glamorous outfits! For this reason, we are proud to announce FarhanaB as our second place winner.

Bambuser Blocked in Bahrain

We can confirm that the Bambuser service is currently being blocked in Bahrain, as the local government seeks to crack down on political protests throughout the country. We are monitoring the situation closely, and have received several reports from users on twitter indicating widespread 3G slowdown throughout Bahrain.

One Bambuser user that has come to our attention is Nabeel Rajab, the head of the Bahrain Human Rights Society. Nabeel has been utilizing Bambuser and his website www.bahrainrights.org to draw attention to human rights abuses in Bahrain. Today, we learned on twitter that, like many of our users throughout Bahrain, he is no longer able to access or remotely upload footage from the country to his Bambuser.com account. We have been informed that some Bambuser accounts are being censored within Bahrain, as the local government seeks to control the news in the face of demonstrations by protestors in the country. This attempt to disrupt internet communications seems to mirror what we witnessed in Egypt a few weeks back.

New Egypt page: Taking citizen journalism one step further

As Egypt comes alive online, we are pleased to introduce of a new page on the site. Dedicated solely to protests across the globe, it will give the voice back to the people, allowing them to share their stories with the rest of the world, without prejudice or agenda, part of the beauty of live streaming. Importantly, it also supplies a social platform that grants the rest of the world the opportunity to exhibit their support. By simply using the hashtag #egypt, supporting videos will appear on the protest landing page, and ensure the voice of the Egyptian protesters and their supporters isn't lost despite internet crackdowns.

We decided to create the page following the banning of our service in Egypt last week. We saw a number of videos appear on Bambuser of people demonstrating in their honour from a number of places outside the country, and we wanted to showcase our support for freedom of speech and peaceful protest, even with the service blocked.

The new page is the latest step in our continued mission to allow users to share what is important to them, as it happens, with followers around the globe. We will not waver in our mission to allow people to share what matters most to them, and to broadcast momentous events as they happen.

Bambuser blocked in Egypt as Government seeks to control news agenda

We can confirm that Bambuser was blocked in Egypt at 1 PM CET January 25th, as the local government seeks to control the news in the face of mass demonstrations by protestors frustrated by the poverty and oppression they face in the country.

Organised by internet savvy, young Egyptians using Twitter and Facebook to communicate and organise, Bambuser has proved to be the perfect tool for protestors to quickly and easily share content – live – to a watching world, on social media sites. Prior to services like Bambuser entering the field, protestors would record videos and upload them to YouTube when they got home; however, many never made it, as police confiscated phones. Now they can't operate like that, and instead have chosen to close the whole service in order to stay in control.

Here at Bambuser, we are proud to be a democratic tool for freedom of speech, and condemn the abuse of power that we are seeing today. We are working hard to ensure access resumes for the Egyptian community and stand by them in their quest for the right to protest.

We're live on Samsung bada!

We are constantly extending our list of supported devices and platforms.

Anyone with Samsung's first bada device, the Samsung Wave, can now use Bambuser to share experiences from their mobile phone in real time. Bambuser for bada lets you broadcast using the front or back camera, geo-tag your broadcasts and share them with your friends and favourite social networks.

Bambuser for bada is available for download in Samsung Apps and the application can be installed either directly on your phone or through Samsung Kies.

This first version of the application officially supports the Samsung Wave (S8500). Future versions will bring support for more models and features, as Samsung adds more models to the platform. The application participated in Samsung's global bada developer challenge with over 2000 other contestants and was, after a long wait, announced a device phase winner!

As many of you have probably read in the news, the recent election in Egypt has been marred with claims of violence, vote rigging and general unrest. Alongside a voice on Twitter and Facebook, users flocked in their thousands to stream their live footage on Bambuser, enabling everyone to share their side of the story, with journalists barred from covering the event on the ground. Over 10,000 live videos have been streamed over the past few days on Bambuser, capturing events in the lead up, during and post-election, a tenfold increase in daily broadcasts, with videos continuing to come in even now. One of the key visions from our founders in creating Bambuser was to support citizen journalism and the freedom of all to report, and we are proud to be enabling people all over the world with their own voice.

Check in support for Foursquare, Gowalla and Brightkite

The check-in hype is all around us, but how fun is it to only check in at a venue? Why not check in with a live broadcast?

For a while we have been testing this on Foursquare and Brightkite and we are now adding Gowalla to our portfolio of supported check-in services.

To check in with a live broadcast you need to connect Bambuser with the service of your choice, which you can do on your dashboard. When you start a live broadcast you can choose Share, the service you want to check in through (i.e. Foursquare) and then choose the location you want to check in to!

Updated app for iPhone

The latest release of our iPhone app, version 1.7.2, brings our live broadcasting experience to the iPod Touch fourth generation, includes support for the front facing camera on the iPhone4 (requires iOS 4.1) as well as support for sharing your broadcasts using SMS.

To share your current broadcast to friends via sms, simply tap on the Share icon and choose SMS.

We're finally ready to launch a first version of this feature that countless of our great users have requested. The sharing concept is based on your Facebook friends lists and as of today, users that have connected their Bambuser accounts to Facebook will be able to share private broadcasts to selected friends. It works like this:

When you start a private broadcast, the Bambuser application will fetch available friend lists from your Facebook profile.
When you chose "share" and then "Facebook" the Bambuser app will show a list of friend lists you can share to. Simply click on one or more friend lists that you'd like to give access to your broadcast.
Your friends will be asked to confirm their identity to start watching (this only needs to be done once).

The rationale for using Facebook is that many have their friends listed there already, which lowers the barrier of sharing, compared to if you had to ask all your friends to create a Bambuser account first. If you don't use Facebook, hang in there. It's likely that we add support for sharing between Bambuser accounts as well down the road.

So off you go now and stream birthdays, confirmations, holidays, weddings or even love songs to your special one(s) :-)

Adding yet another platform Maemo.

The bambuser factory has produced yet another application for a new platform. This time it is the open source platform Maemo 5. This platform is actually a bit special for us, not only because it has its roots in Finland, but because we can access all the goodies we want in the phone, such as hardware accelerated video encoders, to get crisp, sharp, full frame rate video.

Jonas, Tom and Hans just got back from a couple of great days in London where we were invited to join the Facebook Developer Garage in a hackathon and the following Facebook-bonanza featuring Mark Zuckerberg. The hackathon was great and sported lots of ideas, appreciated advice and support from Facebook executives. We did some Facebook related product development ourselves and we hope to be able to share the results with you in the near future. Lots of amazing and talented people gathered during the two days and the atmosphere was truly inspiring. It was of course a pleasure to chat with Mark, Ethan, Mike and the other guys from the Facebook team and we thank Christian Hernandez for inviting us!

4G world premiere

Back in january when TeliaSonera released their 4G network they broadcast the press conference over Bambuser using 4G. This was a world premiere. Now this summer the commercial launch of 4G networks is happening in Sweden. To promote the release TeliaSonera is using Bambuser all over the country to stream live events to the public. We just want to give you a short preview of what the future of broadcasting can look like when broadcasting Live HD video. Here a computer, a HD camera and a 4G dongle is used, all nicely packed up in a back pack. We cannot wait until mobile phones can take full advantage of all this mobile bandwidth.

Go 1000 km in a 4 km/h excavator

Jukka Mutanen from Finland put up a Facebook group where he promised that if the group gathered more than 50000 fans he would take his mini excavator and drive 1000 kilometers through Finland - from Hangö to Kuusamo. Pretty insane idea if you ask me.

When you realize that the mini excavator makes only 4 km/h things get even crazier. 4 km/h is about the speed your grandmother walks. Accordingly, Jukka has to spend some 250 hours in the mini excavator to reach his goal. To please the massive crowd of 83000 Facebook fans and quite a lot of non-Facebook-fans as well, Jukka placed a live streaming web cam and a GPS inside his vehicle and is now broadcasting his extravagant journey live on Bambuser as well as on Facebook. Fans and followers can tune in and watch his exact position and a lot of people have gathered along the road to get a glance of the pretty odd carriage.

We think this is an awesome and extremely fun way to use Bambuser. As of today he's had almost half a million views on his channel!

TV4 Live from Stockholm Marathon (this was national TV)

This Saturday the yearly Stockholm Marathon took place. From Bambuser's perspective it was a great event for two reasons. Our CXO Jonas Vig made it around the full 42km and you can follow his run. The viewers can follow all the behind the scene action, follow their daily lives up until the final. Check in on Foursquare with a Live video

At the Bambuser offices we love live streaming and we love checking in to places. We've heard that there are quite a few of you who fancy that as well... Therefore it was quite a no-brainer to merge two cool things into one. Starting from today you can connect your Foursquare account with your Bambuser account (go to your dashboard -> settings -> share -> and connect to Foursquare). Next time you fire up a live broadcast from the Bambuser mobile app, you will have the option to share the broadcast on Foursquare and check in on the venue you're at. If you've connected your Foursquare account to for example Facebook it will be posted on Facebook as well. Neat, right?

Introducing Customized Sharing

Since we introduced sharing of live broadcasts to Facebook, Twitter and other 3rd party services we've received a lot of requests for more customizable sharing options (yeah, we know... not ALL videos are Facebook material :-) To be honest, we feel the same way. Therefore we just released an improved way of customized sharing

With the new sharing functionality you connect your Bambuser account to your 3:rd party services as usual but you will now have the option to auto-post (as before) or to choose which broadcasts you want to share and where you want to share them.

The improved sharing functionality is available for Symbian and Android phones as of last week and today we got the approval for our updated iPhone application as well. Windows Mobile users, fear not. It will be available for you as well shortly. Here's what the sharing menu looks like for iPhone users (click on the image to enlarge it);

Facebook fan pages integration

One of the most requested features since we launched our facebook integration has been the possibility to also send to your facebook fan pages. Today we are happy to say that it's possible. If you have a band and want to stream your next concert live, or if you are a company wanting to make a live press release about your latest product and get real-time feedback, you can now post your broadcast automatically to that facebook page.

To get the magic going, head over to your Dashboard, go to Settings, 3:rd party services, Facebook, Connect to Facebook if you haven't already, and then you can add the pages you want to post to.

Last week provided some interesting insights on tha approval criterias over at Apple's (we totally understand them though. No harm ;). So we moved some stuffed around (and oh yeah, the Team worked 24/7...) and we've now submitted a new version of Bambuser for iPhone - Non-jailbreaked that is! We REALLY anticipate this version to be officially approved by Apple. The application will allow you to stream live video from any iPhone, even the ones that don't have video capabilities. Yeah I know, some mad voodoo-stuff from the dev guys ;) Look out for more info sooooon!

Yesterday we made a new release of our player that will probably be of interest for our more advanced users. The new player handles non-4:3 aspect ratios correctly when broadcasting from third party applications such as Wirecast and Flash Media Encoder. So now you can broadcast in that good looking wide-screen format from your desktop apps.

(we have been supporting different kinds of widescreen formats earlier but only from mobile phones)

Broadcast live directly on Facebook

We know you’ve all wanted this and now you've got it!

We’re taking our Facebook integration to a new level. When you have connected your Bambuser account to Facebook the live broadcasts will now be seen in the news feed – of course all your friends will also be able to watch it on demand from the news feed after you’ve finished broadcasting. We’ve been testing this day and night for the last few days and what we've seen is that the number of views per broadcast increases dramatically – yay!

If you already have connected your Bambuser account to Facebook you will have to disconnect it on bambuser.com and re-connect it again to make it work. We tried to find a shortcut but couldn't - sorry about this.

Bambuser adds support for broadcasting live over 3G or WiFi from the highly popular Android platform!

This initial release supports all currently available phones running Android 1.5, such as HTC's Dream, Magic, Hero and Samsung's Galaxy. Check out the full list on bambuser.com/phones.

The application includes a wide range of quality-settings, which makes it possible to scale the broadcast video and audio to suit your device and connection speed. You can choose to broadcast publicly or in private, and can enable geotagging of your broadcasts using built-in GPS.

The application shows incoming chat messages while you broadcast, making it possible to interact with viewers anywhere.

Yet another update to Bambuser for Windows Mobile

We recently released an updated version (1.1.1.0) of the Windows Mobile client, which brings progress on several fronts.

The most noticeable change in this version is the ability to rotate the user interface and the sent video, to support a wide range of devices, and to be able to send landscape instead of portrait video on more devices. You can find this under Settings in the application.

Secondly, this version has improved video encoding. The new codec is very well suited for low bandwidth conditions and will give you better flowing broadcasts when you select the lower video quality settings. The high quality setting will continue to use a simpler codec, for maximum detail and speed at the cost of bandwidth.

Additionally, the new version gives more informative feedback in case of connection problems and contains bugfixes for some other rare problems.

New version for Windows Mobile

Here at Bambuser we do not discriminate against anyone. Not even against people using Microsoft-based products. To prove this, we are now launching a new version of Bambuser for Windows Mobile!

First and foremost, this version adds the feature to upload complement data. This has been a very popular feature on Symbian-based phones, and we hope you will enjoy it on Windows Mobile too! It's possibly the best thing to be invented in Finland since rye bread.

Second, the new version supports high quality audio on a broader range of devices. This especially applies to phones manufactured by HTC.

Additionally, there are many small tweaks and fixes under the hood, which should give that little bit of extra performance we constantly try to squeeze out of mobile devices.

If you are new to complement uploading, let us explain: If your connection to the internet is weak when you broadcast live, pieces of the broadcast which can't be sent immediately are stored on your phone, keeping your latency low. When uploading this data afterwards, our servers get to business and start putting together all the pieces to improve your archived broadcast, giving on-demand viewers a smoother experience regardless of how slow and choppy your data connection was.

I can reveal that there is more coming for the Windows Mobile client in the future. Lots of top secret stuff that we (programmers at Bambuser) spend day and night working on, surviving only on the hope that we may one day venture outside the office again.

We are thankful for all feedback we get about existing or wanted features and have everything stored. We consider all suggestions when we decide what to work on.

We also enjoy seeing that more and more of those integrations coming up based on our API. Now you can keep your cozy family gatherings for yourself or capture that private moment in life without sharing it with the whole world. Private mode is here! We will of course keep developing this function to add even more sophisticated privacy options.

From today - Friday 17th of April, the private function is available for all platforms (Symbian, Windows Mobile, iPhone) as well as for broadcasting via your browser. You will need to download a new version of the application to your phone.

Support for FME and updated browser based broadcaster

This morning we rolled out a couple of nice additions to the Bambuser toolbox that should come in handy next time you broadcast from your computer.

We now allow everyone to use the Windows XP / Vista based desktop application "Flash Media Live Encoder" from Adobe, a tool dedicated to high quality live streaming with H.264 and VP6 codecs. Hook up your webcam or DV camera and shine! See the guide for details on how to get started.

Also new is a vastly overhauled browser based broadcaster. Next time you do casual webcam broadcasting you will have a much more user friendly interface to guide you. Look for the "Go live with your cam" button in your dashboard as usual. Kudos to Jasper who pulled this one off!

The dirty story of the iPhone app

A long time ago, we locked the door to our dev. dungeon in a dark cellar in the outskirts of Stockholm. The guy in the dungeon was left with only a handful of things; a computer, the internets, some vegetarian Swedish meatballs and an iPhone. The rules were as simple as clear;

- No sunlight until the iPhone app is released!

Leo was in charge of the whole thing. Many days later and after some assistance from Martin, Leo crawled out of the dungeon triumphing with an iPhone app installed on his phone.

- Nobody puts baby in a corner, he said and raised his hand towards the sky. We didn't actually had a clue what he meant but we were all damn happy to be able to stream live video from our iPhones!

So Ladies and Gentlemen without much further ado; The First version of the Bambuser iPhone app is yours to download via Cydia (requires a jailbreaked phone...) follow the steps here http://bambuser.com/help/iPhone. This version include chat functionality, GPS-support and works best over WiFi. After countless hours of planning and hard work we're now proud to release a widely improved version of our application for Symbian S60 and UIQ.

Our main vision is, and has always been, to provide you all with the possibility to stream live broadcasts with the lowest latency possible. This focus is based on a strong belief that the major innovation of live video broadcasting is the ability to interact. Once you get too much latency that possibility is lost.

In order to keep you as close to real-time as possible we drop a few frames here and there which often still allows you to get a good video - even in poor conditions. However, in areas with very poor network or when loosing the connection every now and then, this has compromised the flow and quality of the on-demand video.

The new beauty; We now store any dropped frame or audio that can't get through while you're live and give you the option to complete your video with this data immediately after your live broadcast. This allows us to keep latency at an absolute minimum while also providing you with a perfect video when watching on demand!

Spectrial, The Pirate Bay trial - Live on Bambuser

Monday 16th of February will be a hectic day in Stockholm, Sweden. This will be the first day of a trial that by many is assumed to be a never ending story. It's a waggish-raggish case that will be followed by supporters of both sides all over the world.

Our friends over at TPB are convinced to make this a spectacular event, hence we are not to expect the average drowzy shoplifter trial.

Although me and Måns will be in Barcelona for MWC, Bambuser will of course send a team to cover the whole thing, baptized by TPB to "The Spectrial"

TV4 use Bambuser to do Live broadcasting in fullscreen on national TV!

This evening Swedish TV4 went all the way when they used Bambuser as a part of their Live talk show "Kvällsöppet" on national TV! Our service was used to provide a live feed from the home of blogger Marcus Birro who couldn't be there in person but took part in the discussion from a distance. The Bambuser stream was broadcasted live in fullscreen as well as on a studio monitor. We're truly excited about this and give mad props to TV4!

Late last year TV4 used Bambuser to broadcast live from The Grande Finale of Swedish Idol2009.

Slowly we are seeing a fantastic merge of how the traditional and new broadcasting technologies can come together.

The Road to Eurovision

TT Spektra (a part of the the largest news agency in Sweden - www.tt.se) teams up with us in order to provide live coverage of one of the largest events in Sweden this year "Melodifestivalen 2009". Over the coming 4 weeks two of their mobile journalists will use Bambuser to broadcast live shows and interviews with artists and celebrities. 17 Swedish newspapers will use the format for their special Melodifestivalen-sites.

- Bambuser is a great tool for live-broadcasting from the field. Through the live-chat that is integrated in the player viewers can interact with our journalists, hence influence the outcome of the production, says Niklas Larson, VP Digital Media TT-Spektra

Yesterday Chris Anderson was in Malmö presenting his observations on charging nothing. Of course his presentation was broadcasted live on bambuser and our own Måns Adler was up in the panel asking questions on the topic together with Jonathan Forster from Spotify and many more interesting people from the swedish media scene.

Last week we finished a great start of bambuser with an evaluation day in Åbo. It was a really refreshing day and bambuser are now ready with new fresh strategic plans and a lot of energy.

Bambuser nominated for Malmö/Lund media award

You should never forget where you come from and we definitely haven´t done that. Therefore we are very excites about our nomination in the "Nöjesguiden Malmö/Lund" media category this year. Malmö is mine and Jonas hometown and Pouria is living there today together with his girlfriend, the city is Sweden's third largest and holds nearly 300 000 inhabitants. On the 27th of february we will all know how it goes. We keep you posted.

Nokia 48h Mission

Three scandinavian teams are competing for the Scandinavian Daredevil title, all in the setting of Nokia 48 hour challenge.
The teams document their road to glory using mobile phones to their Twitter, Flicker, Ovi and of course Bambuser.
We support them all, go in and follow their live updates.

New site launched

For about 36 minutes ago, the new updated bambuser website was launched. We are very happy to let you be a part of what we have been working on for the last couple of month. We would very glad to recieve any form of feedback. A longer blog post will follow on some of the new features. But right now we need to celebrate. See you.

This Friday Sweden will vote for its next idol in Le Grande Finale of the Swedish version of international success story Idol. The program is produced by TV4 and after the big show in the Globe Arena TV4 will use Bambuser to let everyone follow the winner LIVE on the web via www.tv4.se/idol and www.bambuser.com/idol2008.

Bambuser got nominated in two different categories for the SIME awards this year. The two categories are "Best Mobile Solutions" and "Best Technical Innovation", amongst the nominated is our friends at soundcloud and many more. Me and Jonas who are travelling in the US at the moment are hoping to make our first "thanks-speech" through our own technology. But Pouria will of course be in Stockholm representing us, so grab him for a chat.
